Nature-based therapy, also known as ecotherapy incorporates the healing space of nature with therapy for my clients. There are many healing benefits to being in nature. Combining benefits of nature simultaneously with skilled therapy can enhance connection with oneself and surroundings and lower anxiety, encouraging forward movement.
Nature-based therapy can look like many things. The client’s needs and what they are drawn to along with what is going on in our surroundings will determine the role the outside elements play. We may simply be in nature while doing play therapy or talk therapy or we may be incorporating nature more into our sessions.
We may be doing therapy while on nature walks along a creek, pond or among the trees. We may sit on a bench under a tree. We may take a moment and feel the warmth of the sun on our faces or stop and listen to birds chirping, embracing our surroundings. We may take our socks and shoes off and walk on the grass. It can be powerful to go through the senses and ground ourselves. Sometimes unexpected things come up forcing a pause or a pivot. We may find things in nature to make creations or worlds, to help communicate and process.
Nature can be unpredictable so while certain things can be leaned on for support, it can also teach us about adapting and having flexibility. It can help show us our value system, if prepared for one thing and not another. It can help bring awareness outside of ourselves.
There are a few locations offered for Fort Collins and in Boulder. There are ways to incorporate nature into Telehealth sessions as well. We can talk about this if interested.
Let’s explore and discover together.
